During a working visit to Tivat, President of Montenegro Jakov Milatović said that the European Union – Western Balkans Summit, scheduled to take place in Tivat on June 5, will mark “a historic moment for Montenegro” and represent an important milestone on the country’s path toward the European Union.

‍

Milatović met with Tivat Mayor Željko Komnenović, with discussions focused primarily on preparations for the summit that will bring together leaders from the European Union and the Western Balkans.

‍

“On a single day, Montenegro will host 27 leaders of EU member states, four heads of EU institutions, as well as the leaders of the Western Balkan countries. More than 30 leaders will gather here and send a strong message together with us as hosts – that Montenegro’s place is within the European Union,” Milatović stated.

‍

He added that the summit could lead to a clear political endorsement from European capitals for Montenegro’s ambition to become the EU’s 28th member state by 2028 or 2029.

‍

The President also highlighted the international media attention the event is expected to attract, noting that more than 400 journalists from across Europe are expected to attend.

‍

“I believe this is the best possible way to open a successful tourist season,” Milatović said.

‍

Referring to the organizational aspect of the event, the President noted that Tivat has already proven itself capable of hosting important international gatherings, including the Brdo-Brijuni Summit, and expressed confidence that the Bay of Kotor would once again showcase Montenegro as a successful Mediterranean and European country.
